Technology that Counts: Tools that Improve the Quality of Legal Research Instruction

 Recent discussions about legal education highlight the importance of skills-acquisition in law school. Legal research is among the most important skills for law students to acquire. As legal research instructors, we know how difficult it can be to foster development of those skills.

Traditional methods of teaching legal research have focused on in-class lectures and demonstrations followed by out of class assignments. In this presentation, we explain how to turn the traditional teaching model on its head with the help of technology.

DMR: Digital Media … Revolution

When Duke Law implemented the Apple TV and MediaPOINTE DMR HD devices, it unofficially entered the Digital Media Revolution.

The days of worrying about tape and disc supply are over; the concerns about where to put all these recordings and how to catalog them are moot.

But no solution comes without a new set of problems.

The millennium generation has arrived at law school.  With their arrival comes the need to create new instructional materials to correspond with their unique learning styles.  However, their arrival coincides with a period of stagnant or even shrinking law school budgets.  This created a dilemma:  “How can we meet the needs of a new generation of learners with limited resources?”

Disrupting Legal Education: The Impact on Legal Education of Innovations Driven by Evolving Video Conferencing Technologies

Access to high quality, desktop video conferencing technology is rapidly becoming less costly and more pervasive. Over time this technology will very likely become a "disruptive" force that changes legal educations in both foreseeable and unforeseeable ways. This session will report on a number of ongoing pedagogical experiments in the use of desktop video conferencing technology at BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School and examine a range of possible disruptive innovations that may occur in legal educations as this technology continues to evolve and mature.
