Is Pizza Enough? Preparing our Students for the New Normal of Technological Competence

Speaker(s):

Everyone is writing about how increasingly necessary it is for lawyers to have defined technology skills, and that even digital natives have few of the skills required for practice. Most of these discussions also insist that technology skills should introduced in law school rather than learned on the job. How do we help our students appreciate this knowledge gap? And, how to we begin to bridge it? Can we rely on the old standbys? (“Free pizza for 30 minutes of your time! (and some stealth learning)”).

Clinic-Library Collaborations to Increase Adoption of Instructional and Law Practice Technologies in Clinics

Speaker(s):

Many law librarians have studied instructional design and teaching techniques in library school, taught hands-on experiential research courses using various technology tools, or taken online courses as part of a graduate school curriculum. This makes them uniquely equipped to aid clinicians with adopting instructional and law practice technologies to better achieve learning outcomes or impart skills in new ways. This session will present two examples of how law librarians at two different law schools are helping clinicians at their schools incorporate technology into their teaching.

Yes, You Can! - Offering a Law Practice Tech Course at Your Law School

Speaker(s):

Three years after getting the course proposal approved by our academic affairs committee, we were finally able to teach LAW431 - Law Practice Technologies, an upper-level 2-credit course, this spring at UNC Law. In the course, we covered a broad range of topics including cloud computing and ethics opinions surrounding lawyers' use of such; eDiscovery; virtual lawyering; courtroom technology; mobile apps; social media marketing and more. It has been a blast to teach the class and the students seem highly engaged.
