Our Ideas Made Visible: Tools for Visualizing Data

Speaker(s):

Deploying tools and techniques for data visualization is one of the most interesting opportunities for law librarians to demonstrate their IT chops (and, conversely, for IT folks to demonstrate their appreciation of scholarship).  As we move into the era of Big Data, scholars, researchers, faculty, and students will be best prepared if they have available tools and techniques for presenting information visually.  This presentation will review simple to intermediate data visualization tools while focusing on many of the elements espoused by Edward Tufte.  As Tufte has so eloquently stated:  “Graphical excellence is that which gives to the viewer the greatest number of ideas in the shortest time with the least ink in the smallest space.”  New and powerful data visualization tools make this easily within our reach.
