Screen capture video lectures and tutorials are becoming increasingly popular for flipped classrooms, distance learning, and on-demand demonstrations of technical tools.  This presentation will highlight the habits of thought and planning which can take online video from poor to good and from good to great.  Some of the items that will be covered:

  • Scripting and planning
    • Structuring your script
    • Planning your visuals – both what is recorded and what is created in post-production
    • Aspect ratios
  • Timing and pacing
  • Doing the voice-over
    • Microphone selection and placement
    • The evil Ambient Noise Effect
  • Editing effects in post-production/Creating a visual language
    • Fudging your timing – speeding up and slowing down
    • Zoom? Callout? When and where to use these effects
    • When to use those fancy transitions and when to leave them alone
  • Making it accessible
    • Using automated closed-captioning
