Grabbing and retaining students' attention in a first-year legal research class is a classic conundrum, not made any easier by the swiftness of a 5-week class schedule. The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law has long used a "flipped classroom" format for first year legal research, but this year we pulled out all the stops to create a varied and interactive set of classes that utilized Camtasia videos and quizzing, review exercises using Blackboard's "test" tool, video narratives of former student experiences, interactive clicker response slides in the classroom, CALI lessons (both homegrown and "official"), and an early focus on print resources to introduce students to tools like indexes and tables of contents. This session will highlight lessons learned and ideas for further future innovations.
