Greening the Law Library Computer Lab & other ways to Pay for my CALI conference
One afternoon in February, I changed the default power profile for our 42 public library computers, and ended shaving off over $1000 a year from our electrical bill. A big enough saving to almost pay for my CALI conference, all without any loss of functionality to students!
This session will focus on Tips and Tricks to reduced the amount of electricity used by Law School computers and technology, including:
Automatically shutting down lab & public access computers 6 nights a week using built in Microsoft utilities.
Using inexpensive tools like "Kill a Watt" to monitor power consumption of individual devices, and identify "vampire" devices.
Making public real time data from "smart" power meters to let everyone know how much electricity the building in consuming.
Including power consumption criteria into the purchase of new computers and other electronic devices.
Educating faculty and staff about the power profile settings on their computers so that they can reduce the power consumption of their workstations.
Educating faculty and staff about shutting down their computers at night.
Most users are oblivious to the amount of electricity and costs associated with running computers and other electronic devices. Simply making people aware of how much energy they are using can encourage them to make changes in how they use technology, and save your organization money over the long term… all without spending any extra money.
