Tech triage for Incubator and Residency Programs – a new opportunity for Law Librarians and the Law School IT community.

Currently there are at least 30 Law Schools and Bar Associations running incubator programs and the number may well double in the next year. The incubator programs for lawyers have only been in existence since 2007 and they generally have two goals—training and support for solo and small firm practitioners and improving access to justice for those often excluded from legal resources. During the recently conducted second annual ”Enhancing Social Justice Through Development of Incubator and Residency Programs” at California Western School of Law several panels were convened around the topic of assisting these programs with developing technology for both managing the practices as well as developing tools for more efficient delivery of legal services. Much discussion developed around the opportunities for law schools to increase the exposure of law students to the opportunities and necessity of understanding the use of technology and the ability to adapt to technological change in the role of the lawyer in the twenty first century.

The Conference revealed there is a significant gap in this area that Faculty, Law Librarians and Law School IT staffs can help fill and create new opportunities for marketing their services.

This program will cover the current state of the situation, guidance on how to get involved with the incubator programs, and an interactive discussion of how this could further develop.
