CALI's SuperFuture - Creating Agency as a Business Model
There is a lot going on in legal education these days and CALI is struggling, just like law schools, to remain relevant, viable and future-thinking. Did you ever wonder why so many CALI projects have the word "author" tacked on to them? There IS a good reason. By building tools and services that not only deliver quality content, but also, give faculty, students and lawyers the ability to build, remix and re-publish new content for their own needs and the needs of their constituents downstream, we create "agency".
Faculty can write write their own CALI lessons and even start by using existing CALI lessons and modifying them. Students can use CALI lessons at anytime/anyplace and re-take them to improve their knowledge about legal fundamentals. CALI publishes casebooks and other legal education ebooks that faculty can take and remix or students can use in any way they want to work in the educational environment that best serves their needs. Finally, A2J Author lets legal aid attorneys, and recently, law students, build automated Guided Interviews that automate the process of filling out forms for pro se litigants. This is learning by doing at its best.
All of these represent a CALI philosophy that gives the tools to the user, learner and teacher instead of something entirely pre-packaged, siloed and wrapped in digital rights management (DRM) that does not allow changes or refinements.
The future is both exciting and murky. So much change to absorb, so many challenges to meet, so much fun to be had! I hope this session is both informative and interactive as we figure out together, CALI's SuperFuture.
